Apple Cinnamon Scones Recipe

    Table of Contents

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup finely chopped apples (peeled and cored)

    For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

    Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon until well combined.

Step 3: Cut in the Butter

Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients.

Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. The butter should be evenly distributed.

    Step 4: Incorporate Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

    Step 5: Add Chopped Apples

Gently fold in the finely chopped apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.

    Be careful not to overmix.

    Step 6: Shape the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.

Pat it into a 1-inch thick circle.

Using a floured knife, cut the circle into 8 wedges.

Step 7: Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Topping

In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the topping.

Sprinkle this mixture over the top of each scone, ensuring an even coating.

    Step 8: Bake

Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

    Step 9: Cool and Serve

Allow the scones to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve warm or at room temperature.

    Optional Glaze:

For an extra touch, you can drizzle a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and a splash of milk over the cooled scones.

Enjoy the delightful aroma and flavors of these Apple Cinnamon Scones, a perfect combination of flaky goodness and the warmth of cinnamon-spiced apples.

Whether served with a cup of tea or enjoyed on their own, these scones are sure to become a comforting favorite in your home!
