Apple Streusel French Toast Casserole Recipe


    • 1 loaf of French bread, cut into cubes
    • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
    • 6 large eggs
    • 2 cups milk
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt

    For Streusel Topping:

    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, diced
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)


    Prepare the Casserole:

    Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

    Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

    Arrange the cubed French bread in the prepared baking dish.

    Prepare the Apples:

    In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the sliced apples until they are slightly softened, about 5 minutes.

    Spread the sautéed apples evenly over the bread cubes in the baking dish.

    Make the Custard Mixture:

    In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

    Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apples in the baking dish.

    Prepare the Streusel Topping:

    In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, diced cold butter, cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using).

    Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to incorporate the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    Add Streusel Topping:

    Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the custard-soaked bread and apples.

    Let it Sit:

    Allow the casserole to sit for at least 20-30 minutes, allowing the bread to absorb the custard mixture.


    Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.


    Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

    Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup before serving.
