Swedish Cardamom Buns Recipe


    For the Dough:

    • 1 cup milk, lukewarm
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
    • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting

    For the Filling:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 tablespoons ground cardamom

    For the Glaze:

    • 1/4 cup water
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar


    Step 1: Prepare the Dough

    In a small bowl, combine lukewarm milk and yeast.

    Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

    In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, sugar, melted butter, ground cardamom, and salt.

    Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring continuously until a soft dough forms.

    Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

    Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

    Step 2: Prepare the Filling

    In a small bowl, mix together softened butter, sugar, and ground cardamom until well combined.

    Step 3: Roll and Fill

    Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle (approximately 16×20 inches).

    Spread the cardamom filling evenly over the dough.

    Starting from the long edge, roll the dough tightly to form a log.

    Step 4: Cut and Shape

    Using a sharp knife, cut the log into approximately 12-15 slices.

    Place the slices on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each bun.

    Step 5: Let Rise Again

    Cover the baking sheet with a clean cloth and let the buns rise for an additional 30-45 minutes.

    Step 6: Bake

    Bake the cardamom buns in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.

    Step 7: Prepare the Glaze

    While the buns are baking, prepare the glaze by dissolving sugar in water over low heat.

    Set aside to cool.

    Step 8: Glaze and Serve

    Once the buns are out of the oven, brush them with the sugar glaze while they are still warm.

    Allow the Swedish Cardamom Buns to cool slightly before serving.
