Texas Sheet Cake Recipe

    For the Cake:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 cup water
    • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
    • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    For the Frosting:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
    • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
    • 1/3 cup buttermilk
    • 3 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)


    For the Cake:

    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet cake pan (about 18×13 inches).

    In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.

    In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, water, and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

    Pour the hot cocoa mixture over the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.

    In a separate bowl, mix together the beaten eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Add this mixture to the batter and stir until smooth.

    Pour the batter into the prepared sheet cake pan and smooth the top.

    Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

    For the Frosting:

    In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa powder, and buttermilk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.

    Remove from heat and gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.

    If desired, stir in chopped pecans.

    Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake, spreading it evenly.

    Allow the cake to cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.
