Giants and Pro Bowl RB 'no closer' to deal resolution

The Giants and running back Saquon Barkley have failed to reach a contract agreement.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post claimed the sides are "no closer than ever on an agreement" and have until July 17 to conclude a multi-year settlement.

Barkley rejected the franchise tag  and a $14M offer earlier this summer. Barkley and New York began renegotiating after the draft due to the weak running back market.

Dunleavy thinks guaranteed money may be the last issue. Guaranteed franchise tags.

Barkley will earn $22.2M on the tag for the next two years, which may be less than a long-term contract and why he's not taking the Giants' offers.

"If the assumption is that his first two years are guaranteed for just $22 million, there's no deal to be made," former sports agent and CBS Sports expert Joel Corry said, per Dunleavy.

If the first two years' cash flow was at least $26.5M, you could cope with that promise. After signing Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160M deal, they don't need another big cap figure.

NY's top offensive player is Barkley. The 26-year-old carried 1,312 yards and earned his second Pro Bowl last season.

Stop arguing and compromise. As season preparations begin, the lengthy discussion wastes time.
